SANM560 Winter Quarter 2023
We received feedback on our video and, at the suggestion of our professors, removed some of our shots. We now have 4 shots, and my vellum effects will be included in two. I refined the vellum effect for our 3rd shot, and then got to work on vellum to be used as a fixture for shot 4.
I did lots of trial and error for my second effect, eventually deciding to go with multiple grids with mountain nodes applied to them, which I draped vellum strips on top of.
I then handed off my fx to Ethan to light and set up for our review on Tuesday.

Troubleshooting:
This week I ran into some issues with my vellum sim for my first shot. Specifically in that when I went to slow it down to make it slow motion, if I changed the frame rate of timestep of the sim, it would behave really strangely. It bunched up and stopped flowing as I wanted to. The solution I did was to cache the sim with 3 substeps, and then retime it to 0.65 speed with 3 substeps. This had the negative feature of increasing the cache file size, but through clearing and deleting unnecessary attributes, I got it down to a workable size.
Another issue was the matter of how I was going to make the ceiling feature for the final shot. I tried using popwind on several vellum strips, but it did not behave the way that I wanted. I eventually decided to go with laying vellum strips on several grids with animated mountain nodes, so that they would have a somewhat randomized appearance. This still need some work and I anticipate developing it more in the coming days.
